Rules for Living was a chaotic and fun production. Early on, Braxton and I decided we wanted the rules of the play to be very clearly displayed so the audience could follow along and we could embrace the game-like nature of the script. While analyzing the script, it became clear to me that the set was Edith's domain--it was her kitchen, her coordinating the meal and the gathering, and, like the rules make clear, her space to control. This also meant it was important that we not only have a feast of food props, but that the kitchen was functional--from real appliances to running water and a stovetop used to actually cook on stage. Braxton wanted the space to feel like a stereotypical Hallmark Christmas movie from the outside, until the cracks started to show and food begins getting thrown. We had tall walls to account for projections and to allow for a second level--which supported Emma's "deus ex machina"-like entrance toward the end.
