Our production of Macbeth embraced folk horror elements to place a focus on the influence of the witches in the events of the play. In preparation for this design, I did a great deal of conceptual and historical research. For the set and props, conceptually, I focused on earthly textures--stone, branches, and animals. Historically, I researched every location referenced in the script and the castles believed to be occupied by each family. When it came to lighting, I studied the properties of light that create an unsettling feeling--shadows, silhouettes, unnatural colors, and uncommon angles.

I embraced texture a great deal both scenically and in the lighting design. There was a great deal of movement in the piece, not only in the fight choreography, but in the way different characters navigated the space. Scenically, this meant making modifications to support the actors feeling comfortable when navigating the set while making irregular movements. In the lighting, this meant utilizing intentional transitions rather than blackouts for actor safety and utilizing texture in a majority of the fixtures used to emphasize this movement throughout the space.
